3 Surefire Signs a Job is Right for You

Do I love my job? Do I hate it? Is my job right for me? Should I quit?

These are tough questions that many of us have asked ourselves at one time or another. If you haven’t, you probably should. It’s essential to assess your job periodically and figure out whether or not it’s the right fit for you. Compensation is an important consideration when thinking about your job satisfaction, but money is not what makes you happy or unhappy long term. Here are a few other things to think about when trying to decide if your job is right for you.

1. Flow

In the right job, you’ll occasionally experience what many call “flow.” Do you ever find yourself so focused on a project or task that you block out your surroundings and lose track of time? Is it 4:30 when you thought it was 1:45? That’s flow. Many describe the feeling you get from flow to be similar to how they feel after meditation. It’s rejuvenating and relaxing. It’s not something you should expect to experience every day, but studies show that the more often you experience flow, the happier you are at your job.

2. Coworkers

Do you like the people you work with? Do you occasionally socialize with them outside work? If you’re in the right job, you probably care about your coworkers as friends and enjoy spending time with them during the workday. You may look forward to Monday mornings so you can talk about last night’s Game of Thrones episode or find out how their kids did in the soccer tournament over the weekend. Being invested in the lives of the people you share the majority of your day with can do wonders for your job satisfaction. It’s comforting to know that you can rely on your coworkers to be your support system and you’re happy to be theirs.

3. Culture

How your leadership team interacts with the staff is another crucial factor in whether or not you are a good fit for your job. Does your boss care about your personal and professional success? Do they typically promote from within? Are you made to feel that your contributions are valuable? Do they encourage you to learn new skills? Are they smart and ethical? Are the organization’s values consistent with yours? The answers to these questions will help you decide if this job with this company is right for you.
